Although a standalone brand, Portugália Airlines has been a subsidiary, first of regional airline TAP Express since 2006. Owing to financial issues, a restructuring was carried out in 2022 and Portugália is now a subsidiary of TAP Air Portugal, the country’s national flag carrier. This followed the replacement in 2016 of the airline’s entire fleet of Fokker 100 and Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft with Embraer 190 and ATR 72-600 models. Portugália is now essentially a virtual airline, outsourcing all of its flight operations to TAP Air Portugal, whilst retaining its own brand, marketing, ticket sales and customer service operations.

Portugália Airlines, along with TAP Express (now another virtual airline) serve destinations in the Tap Air Portugal portfolio. This includes more than 80 destinations in 34 countries around the world, in Europe, Africa, North America and Latin America. It is headquartered at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport.
