Based in the Madagascan city of Antananarivo at the Ivato International Airport, Madagascar Airlines is this island nation’s flag carrier, majority owned by the state. The airline largely serves domestic routes, connecting Antananarivo with destinations including Nosy Be, Antsiranana, and Toamasina. It had also made a foray into international services, with flights to international destinations in Africa, Asia and Europe, such as Paris. However, since November 2023, the majority of international routes have been suspended to reduce financial losses. This is due to economic frailties within the business and the subsequent implementation of a recovery plan.

Madagascar Airlines operates a diverse fleet of aircraft, including older models such as the 1990s era Airbus A340-300 and the more widely used Boeing 737-800. It also uses three of the much smaller de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter aeroplanes on its shorter domestic routes.
