As the world’s largest airline by employee numbers and passengers carried, second largest by revenue and fourth largest by profit, American Airlines is something of a key player on the international airline market. It’s also known as one of the ‘Big Three’ US airlines, alongside Delta and United. Founded in 1936, it is also one of the world’s oldest airlines. A member of the Oneworld alliance, American Airlines is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, with hubs across the United States in cities including New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Chicago and Phoenix.

The airline operates both domestically and internationally, serving more than 260 domestic destinations across all 50 US states. It also operates international flights to five different continents (it does not fly to Africa). Key international routes include flights from various US cities to London, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Tokyo, New Delhi and Sydney.

American Airlines is known to have one of the most extensive and generous loyalty programmes for frequent flyers, with its AAdvantage loyalty scheme.
