Air Berlin

In 2023, German aviation entrepreneur and founder of small German charter airline, Sundair, Marcos Rossello purchased the brand rights to Air Berlin. It is unclear what the future holds for this currently defunct airline, with the website currently hosting a ‘Coming Soon’ message, suggesting a resurrection in the near future.

Air Berlin in its original form operated from 1978 until its insolvency in 2017. In its heyday, it was Germany’s second largest airline after Lufthansa, as well as Europe’s tenth largest airline in terms of passengers carried. Based in Berlin and with a hub in Dusseldorf, it was also a member of the Oneworld alliance up until ceasing operations. Despite Etihad Airways purchasing a significant stake in Air Berlin in 2011, it was not enough to save the airline, which once connected key German cities with a host of European destinations, as well as locations in the Caribbean and North America.
